Today, I’m sharing Daybreak by Mary E. Godfrey. After Aunt Mary passed away in 2007, I had the chance to choose from the works that became available. Daybreak was my first choice. It stood out to me right away.

The painting shows a woman and her cat, just lying together. It’s a scene I know well. No matter how rough a day has been, my cats have always been there—quiet, steady company that don’t ask for much.

Now things have shifted. My cat has hyperthyroidism and needs my care. Looking at this painting, I see both sides of that relationship—the comfort I’ve gotten from my cats, and what it means to return that care when they need it.

I donated Daybreak to be included in the exhibition Those Who Taught: Selected Works by Former Faculty (May 20 - August 14, 2022) at the Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University, and it is now part for their collection

Before giving Daybreak to the museum, it was a daily reminder of how simple and important that kind of connection with a pet can be.

How do your pets make your days better?
