I had an amazing time presenting Cultural Artifacts / Intro to the Sisters Godfrey Collection at Florence E. Smith Senior Services in Corona, NY! I started by asking, "Do you ever get asked where you're from?" I’m from here … America … but today, I am from “HERE HERE,” this very neighborhood.

My mom grew up in Corona in 30s-40s. Grandma Ruth and Aunt Mary were there in the 1920s. I explained that once upon a time, Corona and neighboring East Elmhurst had significant black/African American populations.
I showcased the Sisters Godfrey Collection, which included two original works from Ruth and Mary, and the mug, pillow, and tote bag that I recreated from each. It was a great opportunity to do a sneak peek of my website and share the importance of Black History Month.
"Every single one of us is part of that history and it's crucial to share it with others so it is never forgotten."
We had singers, poetry readers, and dancers, and indulged in a sumptuous soul food lunch prepared by the senior center director. It was a wonderful time!
